My business mentor shared an email with us in her mastermind group. The lessons are those I’ve journaled about a lot recently. The bold question…
What do you want?
When you approach it from any angle in life, it's a deep question. But, when you narrow your focus as it pertains to your writing life, I know it will give you more clarity. It did for me…
What do you want in your writing?
What do you want to produce with your writing?
What (or who) do you want to serve with your writing?
When you answer questions like this with specificity, you remove the thin (or thick) veil of obscurity.
Often I hide in the broad-stroke statement of looking for clarity, direction, or trying to figure something out. I love the assurance that can follow when I get bold and write what I want. It will help you as well…
You must be honest with yourself.
“What do you want”?
We often do know what we want. But, we’re afraid to own up to it. It’s too bold, or you don’t deserve it. It’s a way out there thought, or you’re just too old to think like that.
Whatever those thoughts are, they are holding you back. What’s an easy way to break free? Articulate the answer into a statement of words you can read often.
What do you want?
What do you want with your writing life?
What do you want with your current writing project?
What do you want with your books, stories, and words?
What do you want for your readers?
What do you want for your characters in your stories?
When you answer those with clear answers, it’s the foundation for your desired outcome.
What is the desired outcome?
If the only skill you learn in 2024 is to clearly articulate what you want so that you can forge your path to your desired outcome, then you will be leaps and bounds ahead of many other writers.
Thank you to my friend and mentor Marta Goertzen for sharing something from her business mentor Todd Herman. Marta runs a lovely and gentle business mastermind group called Selah Mastermind. But, I met Marta early in my writing days when were members of a Christian publishing group together. I’ve watched her articulate what she wants…and it’s led her to grow a new coaching business for entrepreneurs and self-publish luscious journals filled with her stunning photography.
